Lvov
"The textbook of the history of European architecture" - that is
how the American artist Rokuel Kent called Ukrainian city
Lviv after his visiting it in the 60s AD. Polish science-fiction writer Stanislav Lem, native of Lviv, considers it to be the most
beautiful and comfortable city in Europe. Commission of UNESCO, preparing the materials to
include Lviv in the list of cities, which need special protection as a cultural heritage
of mankind, was fascinated by its original beauty of monuments, culture and architecture
of the ancient Lviv.
The first mention about the city is in chronicles dated 1256. It was founded by the
Galitsko-Volynsky Prince Danila Romanovich Galitsky and named in the honor of his son Lev.
Visitors of Lviv like to walk through its narrow calm streets where lots
of cafes are situated.
44 architecture monuments are situated on the square Rynok (Gothic, Rococo, and
Renaissance). There is a Bandinelly palace here (17th c.) and
a unique chemist's shop-museum that has been working over 250 years since 1735. 3 times a
week there are organ music concerts in Dominikanskiy Kostyol
(18th c.). There are also within a 5 min. walk: Latin Rome-catholic
kostyol (14th c.), complex of Uspen Orthodox Church
(16-17th c.), Armenian Cathedral (14th c.) and others. There
are 18 museums in Lviv where you can find a
collection of armor and orders, porcelain and furniture, manuscripts about the history of Lviv...
